In september 2010 ben ik aan een boek begonnen over het werk van beeldend kunstenaar herman de vries. In juli 2011 wordt herman 80 jaar; het boek zal daarna in het najaar verschijnen bij uitgeverij d'Jonge Hond in een Nederlandse en een Engelse editie. Centraal in mijn studie van en schrijven over het oeuvre van de vries staan de filosofische en religieuze achtergronden van zijn kunst en, belangrijker nog, wat het werk van herman in filosofisch opzicht impliceert.
In 1956/57 schrijft hij in zijn eerste aantekenboekjes: 'kunst: eine lebensweise. [...] kunst kann sowohl eine lebensweise sein, als auch überlebensversuch.' (1956); 'kunst ist philosophische betrachtung in bildender form. d.h. sie ist auch 'begierde-nach-weisheit'.' (03.03.1957)
Deze gedachte uit de poetica van de kunstenaar - die hij naar mijn mening in zijn leven en werk heeft weten te realiseren - dat kunst een filosofische activiteit is in beeldende vorm, wil ik letterlijk nemen. Mijn essays willen niet alleen het oeuvre van de vries verhelderen, maar vooral formuleren wat zijn kunstwerken impliceren wanneer deze als filosofische statements worden gelezen: wat bieden ze in dit opzicht aan hun publiek? wat maken ze, met welke middelen, bewust? welke arbeid verrichten ze aan onze taal, aan onze beeldtaal en aan de ideeën die via deze gecommuniceerd worden?
Dit betekent een praktisch-filosofische benadering waarin de vries' kunstwerken gelezen worden als philosophical investigations, als esthetisch - in de zin van artistiek èn zintuiglijk - denkproject. Daarbij komt dat kunst en kunstbeschouwing, ervaring en zintuiglijkheid op dit moment intensief in de filosofische belangstelling staan. Dus ook in dit opzicht is het interessant het werk van de vries, dat vooral gaat over de ervaring van de werkelijkheid en van de natuur als primaire werkelijkheid, op deze manier te benaderen. Wat hebben zijn kunstwerken die natuur presenteren, een publiek te zeggen dat vandaag de dag een brede en positieve, maar veelal ongerichte aandacht voor natuur(ervaringen) heeft? welk genot verschaft het werk van de vries? welke uitdaging impliceert het?
In dit blog zal ik teksten publiceren die hoofdzakelijk afzonderlijke kunstwerken analyseren en hun filosofische zeggingskracht wegen. Daarnaast zal ik verslag doen van mijn excursies in het actuele filosofische landschap. Deze teksten zijn met andere woorden vooral notities uit een werk- en denkproces. Eenmaal geplaatst, kunnen ze op een later moment op feitelijke details, verwijzingen en terminologie precieser geredigeerd worden. Veranderingen worden aan het eind van het betreffende essay met hun datum gemarkeerd. De hoofdteksten zijn in het Nederlands, samenvattingen in het Engels.

In september 2010 I started working on a book about the art of herman de vries. July 2011 herman will be 80; the book wil be published in the autumn following by d'Jonge Hond/Zwolle in Dutch and English editions. My study of de vries' artwork focuses on philosophical and religious inspirations in its background and, more importantly, on the question what his works implicate from a philosophical point of view.
In his first 1956/57 notebooks de vries says to himself: 'art: a way of life. [...] art can be both a way of life and an endeavour to survive.' (1956) and 'art is philosophic consideration in visual form. i.e. it also is 'desire-for-knowledge'.' (03.03.1957) [provisional translations]
de vries' notion that artistic activity levels with philosophical activity, I want to take litterally. Firstly my texts strive to elucidate specific artworks and de vries' body of work as a whole; secondly I hope to provide answers to the question what his artworks implicate when read and seen and taken as philosophic statements - what then they offer their public? what is made conscious by them and in which ways? what work they accomplish on the verbal and visual languages we use, and on ideas embedded in these instruments of communication?
From my vantage point this means a practical-philosophical approach in reading de vries' artworks as 'philosophical investigations', as aesthetic (artistic and sensory) investigations. Moreover, I point to the fact that art, aethetics (i.e. the philosophy of art), together with empirical and sensory themes, have been moving to the centre of contemporary philosophical debate. That is also why this approach of de vries' art - being all about the perception and reality of our world, especially of nature as our primary reality - may be of value. What is offered by his artworks, presenting nature to a public that today has a broad and positive, but mostly unspecific interest for nature and its experiences? What pleasures are procured by de vries' art, which challenges does it pose?
In this blog I will publish texts that focus on specific works of art, their analysis and philosophical implications; in a next step these will transform into the book i have in mind. Also I will report from my excursions in the landscape of contemporary philosophy. In other words, you are reading accounts of my work in progress and so publication here means that texts can change, especially in their factual details, references and terminology. Changes will be marked by dates at the end of each essay. Main texts are in Dutch, summaries in English.
